The Other Ones

Have you wondered whatever happened to someone from your past? A childhood friend, relative or even an actor from some past show? How about Jesus’ disciples? We hear about James, John, and Peter. Judas Iscariot’s path was obvious. Matthew writes a gospel. Thomas may have been a missionary to India, but, in Scripture, they disappear. What did Andrew, Simon the zealot, Judas/Thaddaeus, Philip, Bartholomew; James, son of Alphaeus, and later, Matthias ever do afterwards (Matt. 10:2-4; Acts 1:13 NIV)?

Many of them aren’t even mentioned in histories of Christianity. It seems like a slight, what with their status as one of the “Twelve.” Which is a good reminder for us about what is truly important. Jesus declares that anyone who would be great must become a servant (Matt 20:26). The heart of the gospel is pointing people to Jesus. The messengers may have lovely feet (Romans 10:15), but it is the message that matters. Even John the Baptist recognized that he came to prepare the way for Jesus, but ultimately that he must become less and Jesus more (John 3:30).

As we’ve come through another Easter celebration, we recognize those who have been faithful. Still, we keep our eyes fixed on Jesus. He is the center of our faith (Hebrews 12:1-3). Some of us may have a larger voice or influence for a while. But in the end, it’s about making Him known. It’s okay to be one of the unknown other ones. We’re in good company.
